Clingstone vs Freestone

What’s the Difference (and Why It Matters)

Peach season is here—or is it? If you’ve spotted some peaches popping up already, you might be wondering why Tree-Ripe hasn’t rolled into town yet. Here’s the scoop: not all peaches are the same. In fact, the difference between clingstone and freestone peaches is pretty big—and it’s why we wait a few extra weeks to bring you the good stuff.

🍑 What are clingstone peaches?

As the name suggests, clingstone peaches have flesh that clings tightly to the pit. They typically arrive earlier in the season, with their harvest beginning in May in Georgia. They’re beautiful on the outside—but when you go to slice or bite into one, things get a little messy.

Clingstone peaches:

  • Ripen earlier in the season (late May to early June)
  • Flesh sticks to the pit, making them harder to slice
  • Not as flavorful or as much sugar as freestone varieties
  • Mostly used for processing (canned peaches, juice, etc.)
  • Not ideal for fresh snacking or baking

🍑 What are freestone peaches?

Freestone peaches, on the other hand, are what we’re all waiting for. The flesh separates cleanly from the pit—making them a dream to slice, bake, and bite right into. They usually ripen a bit later, which is why our season starts around mid-June.

Freestone peaches:

  • Ripen in mid June into August
  • Flesh separates easily from the pit
  • Sweeter and more flavorful
  • Perfect for eating fresh, baking, preserving, or grilling
  • Grown specifically for flavor

🕒 Why Tree-Ripe waits for Freestones

Our partner Pearson Farm is the oldest peach farm in Georgia, and they’ve been growing peaches the right way since 1885. We wait for the best peaches from the best peach farm in the world. That means waiting for the right variety, picked at peak ripeness, and delivered just days off the tree. We don’t rush the season, because great peaches are worth the wait.

Yes, you might see peaches out earlier than us—but those are clingstones and won’t give you the peach experience you’re looking for. They get to the party first, but freestones are the real guests of honor.

The Tree-Ripe Difference

We believe in:

  • Flavor first – our peaches are grown for taste, not shelf life.
  • Tree-ripened freshness – picked at their peak and delivered within days.
  • A better experience – freestone peaches are just plain easier (and more fun) to enjoy.

Our trucks hit the road in just a couple of weeks, and trust us: once you try a Tree-Ripe freestone peach, you’ll know exactly why we wait. Stay tuned for our first peach deliveries—coming mid-June! Make sure you’re signed up for email alerts!
