Iconic Indian River
Our grapefruit grow near the Indian River area in Florida, long-renowned for growing the perfect grapefruit. With its subtropical temperatures and distinctive sandy soil near the Atlantic Ocean, our grapefruit can thrive.
Our Ruby Red grapefruit is picked and packed by Rio Citrus in Fort Pierce, Florida. Owner Russ Gravlee has been involved with citrus nearly his whole life and leads the team at Rio.
Navigating difficult growing conditions in Florida, Rio Citrus is consistently growing the best grapefruit we can find.
Grapefruit need plenty of time on the tree, and lots of sunshine! While we get anxious to harvest as soon as we can, we need to let them tree-ripen in order to develop the correct acid to sugar ratio.
Grapefruit that makes it way to the grocery store is usually weeks or months old, after having been picked too early. This is great for shelf life, but terrible for flavor. Worse yet, citrus fruits can be artificially colored!
Our grapefruit are carefully grown, never artificially colored. And we never keep them in cold storage, we deliver to you within days of harvest for the best flavor possible!
Perfect timing means perfect fruit.
All our fruit is “tree ripened” allowing it to stay on the tree longer giving it richer, sweeter flavor. Most grocery store fruit is picked too early and stored for weeks or even months. Our fruit is picked and delivered directly to you within days of harvest – you’ll taste the difference.
Our Ruby Red grapefruit harvest takes place in the fall each year. Pre-orders begin in October, and we only harvest what is needed for our orders.
In November and December we deliver our grapefruit directly to our customers through home-delivery and at our ‘Orange Stops’.
