Where Your Peaches Come From & Why it Matters.

You know that feeling. You bite into a peach, one you were actually excited about, and it’s either a mealy, mushy disappointment or a hard, flavorless rock. It makes you wonder why you even tried.

At Tree-Ripe, the whole thing starts with the farm. We only work with growers who pick for flavor and only when the fruit is actually ripe.

Last weekend took us to Fort Valley, Georgia to spend time with the Pearson family. They have been our peach growing partners for over 20 years, and their family has been growing peaches in Fort Valley for far longer than that. This is exactly where your peaches come from, what goes into every box, and how they reach you within days of harvest.

Why Georgia, and Why Pearson Farm?

Will McGehee, the 5th generation of Pearson’s at the oldest family-owned farm in Georgia, took us on a tour of the orchard. He explained why Georgia is the ideal place for growing peaches.

The dense red clay soil provides the nutrients the trees need to thrive and helps protect them during the hot Georgia summers. Unlike other climates that cool down during the night, Georgia summer nights stay warm. That means the sugars can continue to develop consistently until the fruit is perfectly ripe.

In fact, Pearson Farm has been growing peaches on this same land for over 140 years, with knowledge passed down through generations of the family. That kind of history doesn’t happen by accident, it’s a commitment to quality, understanding the land, and careful management of the orchards.

How Are the Peaches Grown?

The family grows dozens of peach varieties across their farm. They carefully select kinds that will ripen at different stages so there are peaches throughout the summer. The trees are trained to grow horizontally, making fruit easier to harvest, and pruned so the tree’s energy can focus on producing gorgeous fruit.

“At Pearson Farm, we visit every tree every 48 hours. So it’s not something you come in and you pick maybe twice or three times. We’ll pick this tree maybe 6 or 7 times during the ripeness to let every single peach get to the point that we want it to.”

That’s the difference between a peach grown for flavor and one grown for a shipping schedule. Commercial fruit is picked too early so it can survive the long journey through retail distribution. Not here. Pearson Farm lets the fruit ripen on the tree, because as Will says, that’s where the sugars develop. The longer it stays, the sweeter it gets.

Bite into a peach that was actually picked at peak ripeness and you’ll taste the difference immediately. It’s bursting with flavor with juice that runs down your arm.

From the Orchard to You.

The packing shed has a rich history of its own. It was once the local schoolhouse, and the oldest living Pearson, Peggy, actually attended school there as a little girl!

Inside, the peaches are washed, sorted, and packed by hand with careful attention at every step. Multiple checkpoints pull out any bruised or blemished fruit so that what makes it into your box is only the best. And nothing goes to waste. The fruit that doesn’t make the cut? The farm’s hogs get to enjoy it. (Will assures us they are very happy about this.)

What we didn’t see is just as telling: no fruit picked before its time, no gas to artificially ripen it, no cold storage sitting for weeks. Just peaches, picked when ripe, packed with care, and on their way to you within days of harvest.

You’ll Taste the Difference!

Tree-Ripe’s partnership with Pearson Farm allows us to fulfill our mission of seeking out the best fruit around the country and bringing it to you within days of harvest.

The concept isn’t complicated, it just requires the right partner. And 20 years of trust tells us we have the right one. But don’t just take our word for it. Find your local Fruit Stop to discover what a peach is actually supposed to taste like.
